Other Mommy: The Closet Door Opens, and Mother Isn’t Alone

By AdminOctober 16, 2026

Other Mommy is a psychological horror film that understands something many modern genre entries forget: fear is built from unease, not from sudden noise. Directed by Rob Savage and adapted from Josh Malerman’s bestselling novel Incidents Around the House, it tells the story of Bela, an eight-year-old girl growing up in a household where her parents’ marriage is quietly falling apart. Played by Arabella Olivia Clark, Bela becomes aware of a mysterious figure emerging from her bedroom closet, one that wears her mother’s face exactly.

At first, the entity seems warm and welcoming, eager to befriend the lonely child. Bela christens it “Other Mommy,” and Jessica Chastain plays the role with a quiet, unsettling charm. But the friendliness slowly curdles into something far darker. The figure soon stops haunting Bela alone and begins to terrorize the entire family, blurring the line between the real mother and the creature impersonating her. Bela is left to work out, with a child’s limited tools, which one she can trust.

The film’s greatest strength is its refusal to lean on jump scares. Savage focuses on building a creeping atmosphere and scattering intriguing mysteries throughout the story, which keeps anticipation high even when nothing is leaping out of the dark. That is the key difference between this film and the usual studio horror: it doesn’t lose its grip in the moments between shocks. Some mysteries are left unanswered, most notably the true nature of the creature itself, but the grounded, realistic approach makes that ambiguity easy to forgive.

Beneath the horror, the film is a bleak psychological drama about family dysfunction. Strip away the supernatural elements and what remains is a study of a household under strain, seen through the eyes of a child. The characters are given real depth and individuality, and even the skeptical figures, who in similar films tend to be frustrating obstacles, are written with enough care that they never become irritating. Fans of The Babadook will recognize the emotional territory, and the film’s own mystery has a similar pull.

In the end, Other Mommy may not be extraordinary, but it is a rare and rewarding piece of genre filmmaking. By putting character, atmosphere, and psychological tension ahead of cheap scares, it delivers a slow-burning, thoughtful chiller that lingers long after the closet door has closed.
