The story follows Klara (Ortega), an exceptionally observant and empathetic solar-powered Artificial Friend (AF), as she watches the world pass by from her department store window, holding onto the hope of being chosen by a family. Her life changes when she is selected by Josie (Mia Tharia), a bright but chronically ill 14-year-old girl whose health has been severely compromised by the very genetic enhancement meant to guarantee her social success. Moving to Josie’s countryside home, Klara builds a profound bond with the teenager and her childhood friend, Rick (Aran Murphy), quickly learning the complex and often contradictory nature of human emotions.
