Coolie Review: Star-Studded Spectacle That Misses the Emotional Mark

By AdminAugust 14, 2025

Coolie arrives in cinemas with massive anticipation, headlined by the legendary Rajinikanth and bolstered by a dream ensemble—Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Satyaraj. Yet, despite its glittering cast, the film struggles to rise above a recycled gangster-revenge formula and over-the-top action set pieces.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj leans heavily on star charisma, but the script offers little narrative weight. Rajinikanth steps into a morally complex role, blending menace and vulnerability, though some of his “dark acts” strain believability. Interestingly, this marks Nagarjuna’s first major negative role, and his swagger in the “I Am Danger” track is a highlight. Aamir Khan’s heavily tattooed cameo and Shruti Haasan’s morally grey mission add flair, while Malayalam talent Sourabh surprises with his dance-driven villainy.

Set against the bustling Visakhapatnam port, the plot touches on gold smuggling, betrayal, and the harsh lives of coolies—though the social commentary is buried beneath chaotic flashbacks and implausible gadgets (yes, there’s a “mobile cremator chair”). Trivia fans may spot nods to Rajinikanth’s 1995 hit Baasha, but without its emotional pull. Anirudh’s thumping score briefly elevates the mood, yet Coolie ultimately feels like a lavish but hollow spectacle that promises grit, only to serve glossy excess.
