Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest drama unfolds in the near future, where grief and technology collide. After losing their seven-year-old son Kakeru in a tragic accident, Otone and Kensuke find themselves adrift in mourning — until a company called REbirth offers them an unusual solution: a lifelike android built in their son's exact likeness, complete with his memories and mannerisms, down to his fascination with train schedules.
The couple reacts in starkly different ways. Otone throws herself into the relationship, treating the android as though he were truly her child returned to her. Kensuke keeps his distance, unable to see past the machinery — at one point wryly likening the robot boy to little more than a glorified Roomba.
As the story progresses, the android Kakeru begins acting strangely, sneaking off into the nearby woods for secret meetings with an unidentified figure. The mystery deepens until it's revealed that this stranger isn't a threat but a visionary of sorts — working to bring together androids like Kakeru with children who have nowhere else to go, building the foundations of a hopeful, if strange, new community.
