Pok Lee was once set to be Malaysia's greatest Wayang Kulit puppet master until the brutal death of his daughter drags him down the path of madness. Ostracized by the locals of his seaside village who suspect him of murdering his own child, he spends his days wandering the swamps in search of her killer and his nights communing with a special shadow puppet he made after her death.

The arrival of Indonesian researcher, Maya and her daughter, Dewi begins to unravel the façade of the idyllic village, a strange place plagued by numerous disappearances of children that the locals attribute to the bloodthirsty crocodiles of the swamp. As part of her research, Maya attempts to get close to the current reigning puppet master, Pok Wana, and neglects Dewi who befriends Ayu, a strange little girl she meets by the swamps. Ayu keeps leading Dewi to Pok Lee's shack, where he performs bizarre solitary performances at night with his special puppet. One day, Dewi accidentally stains Pok Lee's special puppet with her own blood, bringing its spirit to life. With Ayu's help, Dewi asks Pok Lee to teach her the art of shadow puppetry, in an effort to get close to her mother. Thinking that Dewi is his lost daughter, Pok Lee agrees. Soon, he realizes she is not his late child, but takes her on as his student as Dewi displays extraordinary talent in the art of shadow puppetry.

The daily interactions with Dewi begin to heal Pok Lee of his madness. Curious about her daughter's new friend, Maya discovers that Pok Lee is indeed the once famous puppet master. As she goes about organizing a come-back show for him, she bans Dewi from her classes, so that Pok Lee can focus on his show. The reigning puppet master Pok Wana, offers his compound for Pok Lee's show. As Pok Lee spends more time preparing for his show, Dewi feels left out and spends more time with Ayu and her strange friends from the swamp. The day of Pok Lee's big show arrives and he has a complete breakdown on stage. His special puppet seems to en-trance him, making him tell a strange story that makes no sense to anyone. Meanwhile, Dewi is lured deeper into the swamp by Ayu and her friends. Their games take a turn for the macabre and Dewi tries to escape. A mysterious boat ap

Maya follows him, while the rest of the villagers put together a search party to find Dewi. Maya confronts him about the death of his daughter and reveals that his special puppet is made from his own daughter's skin. Pok Lee confesses that driven by grief, he made a puppet with his daughter's skin so that she might tell him how she died and who killed her. After a struggle with Maya, Pok Lee continues with his performance of his daughter's story using his special puppet; her story mirrors Dewi's journey in the swamp. As Dewi struggles to stop her boat from going further into the forbidden zone, she is kidnapped by Pok Wana, disguised in a crocodile suit. She wakes up a captive in his lair, where it is revealed that she will be his next sacrifice in his quest for even greater fame and celebrity. Pok Lee comes out of his trance and tells Maya to follow him into the swamp. They eventually reach Pok Wana's lair, where Pok Lee engages in a brutal hand-to-hand battle with Pok Wana.

As the two men fight their way outdoors, the large shadow of Ayu/Sita Dewi puppet leaps forward and flings Pok Wana into the swamp. Crocodiles rush to finish him off. Pok Lee is reunited with Ayu, who asks him to always remember her by telling her story. Dewi and Ayu say a tearful goodbye. Together, Pok Lee, Maya, Dewi, and the villagers perform a special ancient ritual to bid farewell to all the murdered children and heal the land. The close of the film reveals that this whole story is part of the repertoire of Dewi, now 21- years-old, and a fully-fledged puppet master in her own right. As her storytelling/show comes to an end, we see Pok Lee, Maya and other family members applauding proudly in the audience.
