Zheng Yi Sao (née Shi) is born into a humble fishermen’s family. Circumstances force her into prostitution, and eventually she marries the formidable pirate captain, Zheng Yi. Acting as his co-ruler, she manages their formidable pirate operation with ruthless efficiency. Following Zheng Yi’s death in 1807, Zheng Yi Sao takes control of the notorious Red Flag Fleet. Under her command, she not only maintains the fleet’s dominance but also innovates by adopting Western naval technologies to resist better foreign powers encroaching on the Chinese seas. As a result of her strategic brilliance and iron-clad authority, Zheng Yi Sao becomes one of history’s most successful and powerful female pirates. She evolves into a legendary anti-colonial heroine during the decline of the Qing dynasty.
