Dongjie Rescue draws from a little-known but powerful chapter of World War II. In 1942, the Japanese cargo ship Lisbon Maru, carrying over 1,800 British prisoners of war, was struck by an American submarine near the Zhoushan Islands. Amid the chaos, brave fishermen from Dongjie risked everything to save hundreds of trapped servicemen, shielding survivors even as Japanese forces launched a relentless search.
Rooted in true events, the film highlights not only the human cost of war but also the extraordinary courage of ordinary people who chose compassion over fear.
