In the early months of Russia`s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a Jewish refugee from Kazakhstan became an unexpected hero in the occupied towns near Kyiv. Konstantin Gudauskas, who had found asylum in Ukraine and made Bucha his home, discovered that his Kazakhstan passport allowed him to move through Russian military checkpoints. Taking advantage of this unique access, Gudauskas began methodically rescuing hundreds of Ukrainian civilians trapped in Bucha, Vorzel, and Hostomel. He repeatedly ventured into occupied territories, helping residents escape to safety while witnessing firsthand the atrocities of the occupation.
