Chihaya forms a “competitive karuta club” (karuta: traditional Japanese playing cards) with Taichi, hoping to see her childhood friend Arata again in the world of karuta. With Chihaya as the ace player, the club wins the Tokyo Tournament and a spot in the Nationals.
When Chihaya calls Arata to tell him the news, he shocks her with a confession, “I’m giving up karuta…”
Chihaya is devastated, but tries to focus on preparing for the National Tournament. While training, she learns of Shinobu Wakamiya, the top female player in Japan. When Chihaya realizes that she may get a chance to play her at the Nationals, she becomes obsessed with the idea of beating the Queen and proving to Arata how strong she has become. Chihaya’s obsession with the Queen begins to alienate her from her teammates. Taichi tries to bring Chihaya to her senses, but little by little, their feelings begin to diverge
