Sam challenges an eccentric undertaker, Montgomery Dark, to tell her the scariest stories about death. He then tells her four stories spanning four decades, from the 1950s to the 1980s. The first is about a housewife who finds something disturbing in the bathroom during the 1950s. Next, a college boy suffers retribution in the 1960s. Then in the 1970s, a man is forced to make a difficult choice about his sick wife. Sam, who has criticised all of the previous three stories for being tame and predictable, is horrified to learn that the final story, called "The Babysitter Murders" and set in the 1980s, is about her.
