Persephone, a young woman who is accused of being a witch, escapes execution after being saved by a Reverend Mother from a local convent. She then joins the mysterious woman's small religious retreat, where fellow Sisters seek atonement for their pasts and repent their sins. She struggles to keep up with the others but her lack of discipline soon puts her in trouble with the Reverend Mother. Things turn worse when she starts suffering from petrifying visions of an evil spirit and discovers that it holds a bitter grudge against the Sisters. She realises now that it is not salvation that awaits her here but a fight for her soul.
