Immortal: A Love Story That Awakens the Unknown

By AdminSeptember 07, 2026

Immortal, the debut directorial venture of writer-director Mariyappan Chinna, is a bold attempt to blend romance, creature mystery, and survival thriller into a narrative rarely explored in Tamil cinema. Starring G.V. Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar, the film opens with a prologue set thousands of years in the past, where a tribal couple awaits the birth of their child—only for a mysterious creature to be born instead, planting an unsettling question about its connection to the present day.

The story then shifts to modern times, introducing Magi (G.V. Prakash Kumar), a young man searching for affordable lodging. His search leads him to a luxurious apartment owned by Sindhu (Kayadu Lohar), and he soon becomes her tenant. What begins as a tender romantic track gradually curdles into something stranger, as it becomes increasingly clear that not everything in this relationship is what it seems. A well-placed interval twist shifts the film's direction entirely, propelling the second half into mystery and survival-thriller territory as Magi fights to break free from the eerie world closing in around Sindhu.

Technically, the film benefits from Rajesh M's crisp editing, which keeps the 131-minute runtime feeling tight rather than stretched. Sam C.S.'s music and background score add an appropriately moody layer to the film's atmosphere. Chinna deserves credit for attempting a genuinely uncommon blend of genres—mystery, creature horror, and survival thriller—woven together in a way Tamil cinema rarely sees. Unfortunately, the screenplay doesn't quite dig deep enough into its own premise; a promising central idea is left underexplored, keeping the film from reaching the impact it seems to be reaching for.

Overall, Immortal is a sincere and refreshingly different entry in a genre combination that remains rare on the Tamil screen. It may fall short on narrative depth, but it holds enough intrigue to keep audiences engaged from start to finish—particularly those drawn to fantasy and survival-thriller fare.
